Being familiar with the roof replacement process helps you anticipate potential problems and maintain focus when overseeing your project. Here’s what happens during a typical roof installation process, from beginning to end.
Before Installation
Roof installation doesn’t begin right away. The homeowner usually gets to pick an available installation date, provided it allows time for the roofing contractor to order materials from the manufacturer. During this time, one or two dumpsters will be delivered to your home, both of which will be needed to haul off discarded old roofing. If you need time to clear space in your yard or garage, discuss this with your roofing contractor.
First Day of Roof Installation
Roof replacement is noisy and generates a lot of dust and debris, which would make your home unsuitable for pets and children. Make prior arrangements to have your kids and pets stay at a different location. The International Boarding & Pet Services Association (IBPSA) is a good resource when you need a trustworthy temporary kennel for your pets. Before installation begins, your valuables and furniture has to be protected with dust covers. Talk to your roofing contractor about protecting surrounding landscaping. You may need to cover surrounding plants with a tarp.
Last Day of Roof Installation
Once installation is completed, the roof will undergo a thorough, quality inspection. You will also be given a final walk-through and an opportunity to conduct your own inspection. Your yard will be swept for nails and debris using magnets and other cleaning tools. Your family should be able to immediately move in once the dust indoors have been cleaned.
A Few Days Later
The dumpster that contains the discarded roofing materials will be picked up the next day. Your roofing contractor will send a representative to review the installation work and to collect final payment. Warranty registration will also be conducted with you at this time.
