There are a number of essential items to consider when upgrading your home’s exterior. But these are not limited to your choice of siding material or color – you should take time to learn more about the project itself. This means understanding some of the key terms involved with your siding replacement project.
Backerboard: This refers to the flat material used on the face of the home. This is applied between the studs and the siding to provide a nice, even surface for installing the siding material.
Channel: It is an area of the corner post or accessory trim where the siding and soffit panels are inserted. A channel is typically named after the letters of the alphabet it resembles. Some examples include the F-channel and J-channel.
Flashing: The flashing is a thin, flat material that is positioned behind corner posts, windows and J-channels that prevents draining water from infiltrating your home.
Head flashing: This is an accessory installed with vertical siding to ensure water doesn’t drip onto the panels and seep within them.
Lap: This is short for “overlap”, and, when one panel of siding partly covers another, it’s called a lap joint. Laps help make the siding more aesthetically pleasing because they hide the nails that attach the siding material to your home’s exterior.
Miter: To miter is to create a diagonal cut that’s beveled to a particular angle. Miter cuts are sometimes made into an overlapping siding or soffit panel surface to provide a neater, sleeker look.
Sealant: This means a compound used to fill or seal joints in the siding material to prevent water and moisture from entering.
Weep holes: These are small openings cut into the siding or accessories to allow the condensation accumulated inside the material to run off and outside.
