Your roof – your home’s first line of defense against the elements – is only able to do its job as long as your gutters are working properly. Gutters help divert rainwater away from your roof and foundation. However, your gutter system won’t be able to handle the combined weight of water and debris if they’re made of flimsy material. That’s why you need to do your research before buying replacement gutters.
Vinyl gutters are lightweight, easy to install and resistant to corrosion, not to mention they’re the most affordable option on the market.
Buying tip: The durability of vinyl gutters depends on the thickness of the material. As such, you should avoid thin, cheaply constructed vinyl gutters.
Aluminum gutters are the most common option on the market. Like vinyl, aluminum is lightweight, easy to install and resistant to rust.
Buying tip: In general, aluminum is a durable material, but for homes in areas that frequently experience heavy snowfall, we recommend installing aluminum gutters with 0.032- or -.027-gauge thickness.
If you value durability over everything else, zinc gutters would be a great choice. They’re a bit on the pricey side, but given their exceptional durability, they’re worth every penny. Zinc gutters usually last twice as long as aluminum gutters – and they can even become more durable as they age. Over time, a coating or patina begins to form over zinc gutters, shielding them from natural wear and tear, and raising your return on investment.
However, if you’re looking for a more affordable but durable gutter system, galvanized steel gutters are a good choice. They’re made of steel coated with zinc to protect them from rust. Keep in mind that this thin layer of zinc is easy to scratch, which is why you should only hire an experienced contractor to install galvanized steel gutters or any gutter system for that matter.
